Countless tales entwine the cultural landscape of Ticino. For centuries, romantic notions of its natural beauty, its Mediterranean climate and its “Italianità” have not only drawn visitors to this canton but also enthralled artists. A constant stream of rich and diverse artistic approaches flow through and shape the cultural landscape of Ticino. Such diversity is due in large part to its unique geographical setting. Situated entirely to the south of the Alps, it has, over the course of centuries, developed a close cultural proximity to Italy, where many artists from Ticino have studied and worked. The rise in tourism to Switzerland during the 18th and 19th centuries has also left its mark on Ticino, making it an increasingly iconic subject of picturesque landscape portrayals.

The opening of the Gotthard Tunnel in 1882 provided, for the first time, a rapid and direct link between the regions north and south of the Alps, which led to increasing travel and connections between artists. As a result of this newfound mobility between north and south, the region became a of centre of creative activity and a meeting point for a wide range of personalities and positions, as evidenced by the foundation of such diverse artistic groups as “Der Grosse Bär” and “I Solidali”, or the activities relating to the artists’ colony of Monte Verità. Now, the Graphische Sammlung ETH Zürich presents a selection from its own holdings showcasing the highlights of creative activity in and around the canton of Ticino from the 17th century to the present day. On the one hand, the exhibition refer-ences Ticino as a motif: in landscape portrayal, as a hub of artistic production andas an important element in the lives of artists. On the other hand, Ticino is referenced as a cultural space that has provided a base for artists, forming a meeting place for encounters between a wide range of different attitudes and approaches.

The exhibition presents works by Ticino artists and by others with an affinity to the region. The works shown range from the ink drawings of Pier Francesco Mola (1612–1666) and the land-scapes of Ludwig Hess (1760–1800) to works by Hans Arp (1889–1966), Imre Reiner (1900–1987), or Anita Spinelli (1908–2010), as well as prints by Mark Tobey (1890–1976) and Flavio Paolucci (*1934) produced by the Lafranca workshop, and even architectural designs by Mario Botta (*1934).

"We aspired to a voice" – Anita Spinelli

The exhibition celebrates women through the painting of Anita Spinelli. With observation and introspection, vindication and quest for freedom, her work maintains today all its contemporaneity. With a selection of works from 1933 to 2006 centered on the female figure, the exhibition unveils the artist's continuous dialogue with herself and society.

Anita Spinelli's eyes are critical, sometimes joyful, or grieved, but always empathetic, and never reductive. The artist captures and shares the profound emotion of her characters, revealing their fragility as well as her own disquiets.
For Anita Spinelli, making art is everything. The need for a voice that is independent from social conventions and gender roles is met in her search for expressive freedom – a path that is both tormented and enthusiastic in its quest for autonomy.

Exhibition “Anita Spinelli. Signs of life”

Fondazione Mecrì Museum

28.03 - 30.06.2023

Opening:
Sunday, 26 March 2023, 11am

Museo Fondazione Mecrì
Via Mondacce 207
6648 Minusio

La Fondazione Mecrì is pleased to announce the next opening, Sunday 26 March from 11.00 a.m., dedicated to the painter Anita Spinelli (1908 Balerna - 2010 Mendrisio), one of the first Swiss artists to have attended the Brera Academy in Milan between the 1920s and 1930s. Throughout her long artistic career, the luminous and subtle colour is the indisputable protagonist, in a constant pursuit of freedom and in any conceivable mode of expression. At the centre of her interests is the human being, its thinking and feeling, its evolution in space and time, in its most diverse expressions, in other words in any sign of life.

The exhibition particularly focuses on works designated as 'tecnica mista (mixed media)', i.e. mainly graphic works, etchings, onto which the artist intervened with colour and ink, creating a personal new form of expression. Many of the works are being exhibited for the first time.

The show features around 30 works created from the 1970s onwards. Although one can glimpse a reminiscence of expressionist graphic works with a German influence, as is common in her paintings, Anita Spinelli's graphic work is characterised by her research, which derives from and approaches known styles, but never settles into a preconceived form. Rather, the artist elaborates and reformulates her experiences and acquired knowledge into a language of her own that cannot be attributed specifically to a single movement.
